Privacy Policy

Piano lume (formerly Piano Star) helps you learn piano. This page explains, in plain words, what information we collect, why, who helps us run the service, and the choices you have. Piano lume is currently in beta.
What we collect
- Account details: your name, email address and password (stored only in a scrambled, one-way form we can’t read). If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email and profile picture from Google. If you sign in with Apple in the iPhone app, we receive your name and your email (or a private relay address, if you choose to hide it) from Apple.
- Your learning: lessons and songs you’ve finished, stars, XP, practice time and your settings, so your progress follows you between devices. This includes your stars and best times for My Music pieces, saved under a code that can’t be turned back into the music (see below).
- Payments: Premium payments on the website are handled by Stripe, and in the phone app by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play) through RevenueCat. We never see or store your card number. We keep your plan, its status and the dates it renews or ends.
- Feedback: messages you send us, with the page you were on and your browser type.
- Usage stats: which pages are visited and which lessons and songs are finished, plus error reports so we can fix problems. Visitors are counted with an anonymous id that changes every day and can’t be turned back into your IP address. When you add a piece to My Music, we count only that one was added, its file type and how many notes it has, never its title or music. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies, and we don’t count visitors who turn on Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control.
My Music (pieces you upload)
Sheet music and MIDI files you add to My Music are read on your own device and saved only there: in your browser’s storage on the website, or in the app’s private storage on your phone. The file, its notes and its title are never sent to Piano lume, so we can’t see them, and they aren’t included in usage stats or error reports.
- Your progress on each piece (stars, best accuracy, best time and when you played it) is saved to your account, so it follows you between devices. It’s stored under a fingerprint: a one-way code made from the piece’s notes and your account. The code can’t be turned back into the music, and the same piece gives a different code for every account. When you add the same file on another device, it makes the same code, so your progress comes back.
- Each piece is saved for the account that added it. Someone else signed in on the same device can’t open it in Piano lume.
- The pieces themselves don’t move between devices. Clearing your browser’s site data, or uninstalling the app, deletes them (your progress on them stays with your account).
- Pieces added before October 30, 2026 were saved on our servers. The next time you open My Music, they’re copied to that device and then deleted from our servers.
Piano keyboards and Bluetooth
If you connect a piano keyboard by USB or Bluetooth, the notes you play are used on your device to run lessons and songs. The phone app asks for Bluetooth permission only to find and connect your keyboard; it doesn’t use Bluetooth to work out your location.
The microphone
If you turn on the microphone (to play a real piano without connecting it), Piano lume listens for the notes you play while a lesson, a song or the practice piano is open (and on the settings page, to test it). The sound is checked on your device as you play. It is never recorded, saved or sent to us or anyone else, and only the notes it hears are used, the same way as notes from a keyboard. You can turn it off any time in Settings, and your browser or phone can take back the permission.
Cookies and storage on your device
We use one cookie to keep you signed in. Your progress and settings are also saved in your browser so Piano lume works without an account, and your My Music pieces are saved there too. There are no advertising cookies.
How we use it
- To run Piano lume: save your progress, unlock Premium and send account emails (like password resets).
- To improve it: understand which features help people learn, and fix bugs.
- To keep it safe: limit repeated sign-in attempts and stop abuse.
We don’t sell your information and we don’t show ads.
Who helps us run Piano lume
- Netlify hosts the website and its database.
- Stripe processes Premium payments on the website.
- Apple, Google and RevenueCat process Premium bought in the phone apps. RevenueCat receives your Piano lume account id (not your name or email) to link the purchase to your account.
- Resend sends account emails.
- Google, only if you choose “Continue with Google”, and Apple, only if you choose “Sign in with Apple”.
They only receive what they need to do their part.
How long we keep it
Your account information and progress are kept until you delete your account. My Music pieces are on your device, not with us, so they stay until you delete them there. Usage stats are deleted after about 13 months. Feedback you sent stays with us but is no longer linked to you once you delete your account. Stripe keeps payment records as the law requires.
Your choices
- Use Piano lume without an account. Your progress then stays on your device.
- Delete your account anytime from your Profile (on the website or in the app). This removes your account and progress, deletes the My Music pieces saved on the device you delete it from, and cancels Premium bought on the website. Pieces on your other devices stay there until you delete them or clear that browser or app. Premium bought in the app is billed by Apple or Google, so cancel it in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Step-by-step instructions are on Delete your account.
- Ask us what we hold about you, or to correct it, using the feedback button.
Children
Accounts are for people 13 and older. Younger learners can use Piano lume without an account, or with a parent’s account and permission. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, let us know and we’ll delete it.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy we’ll update the date at the top, and tell signed-in users about important changes. Questions? Use the Send feedback button at the bottom of any page or in the app menu, or email learnwithpianostar@gmail.com.
